The Role of Fasting in Stem Cell Therapy

Fasting is the practice of refraining from eating for a specific duration. Research suggests it can deliver benefits at the cellular level, including the ability to better resist toxins and stress. It could also help to regulate the immune system.

To see these benefits, however, fasting must take place for at least 24 to 48 hours. While no food should be consumed during these windows, you can drink water, coffee, or tea to ensure proper hydration.

With these cellular benefits, researchers were interested to see whether fasting could also improve stem cell production. Stem cells are the undifferentiated cells that act as the foundation for all specialized cells and tissues in the body. They have incredible healing, anti-inflammatory, and immune regulating properties. According to MIT research, the rate of stem cell regeneration improved drastically after subjects fasted for 24 hours. Stem cells reproduced at higher levels, and in fact, doubled their regenerative capabilities.

For this reason, patients who are due to receive stem cell therapy are often advised to consider fasting. The practice could help enhance outcomes and maybe an option that the patient may want to consider. Oftentimes, dietary factors trigger inflammation in the body, which could inhibit cellular response and limit the effectiveness of treatment. At the same time, there are also some dietary agents, such as antioxidants in green tea and curcumin, which have been shown to significantly improve stem cell response.

While it’s possible that regular fasting and good nutrition could enhance stem cell activity in the body, it’s always a good idea to discuss any caloric restrictions with your doctor before making any changes to your diet.
